Mother Teresa: "Angel of Mercy"
On October 19, 2003, Pope John Paul II beautified Mother Teresa in Rome, taking her one step closer to sainthood
. The beatification of the Macedonia-born nun could be a step towards her being named a saint of a Catholic Church.
In 2002, the Holy Father recognised a miracle needed to beatify Mother Teresa of Calcutta. The miracle coincided with Mother Teresa's first death anniversary in 1998, when a non-Christian woman in India who had an abdominal tumor woke up to find herself cured. Members of the Missionaries of Charity had prayed for their founder's intervention to help the sick woman. After her beatification, the recognition of another miracle will be required for sainthood.
When she was alive, Mother Teresa was called "a living saint". A mere six years after her death, she is on the road to sainthood proper.

This tiny, wizened figure captured the imagination of the world with her dedication to the poor, particularly in Calcutta where she established her first shelter to cope with the thousands of "pavement people".
No matter how destitute, diseased or repellent they might have been, the poor were welcomed. The dying were afforded a dignity in death.
Mother Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Skopje, Macedonia, on August 26, 1910. She went to Kolkata in 1929, began a life dedicated to the service of the poor and dying and came to be widely considered as a living saint.
Mother Teresa received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She died here in 1997.
